I am pondering the possibility of a 3D display, and wondering if it would be remotely feasible at any point in terms of compatibility with the Rogue Survivor program. It has been done in Dwarf Fortress to allow looking at your fortress, but this did not allow any movement of any kind or any realtime changes, so any living things beyond landscape was not possible. However, because RS is turn based, I think it is plausible if such issues as camera location and such were able to be worked out. The problem is the way I am imagining it, the tiles would create preset models and the rendering would be roughly the same as the current tile set method. Other issues include where would actors be facing, could they be like a chess piece and look decent? And would the obvious top down perspective function? In general I just want to get an idea on if it could be done or even should be done.

I think it would be possible. Their is a type of software called Noteye that allows FPS view of RL Games, overhead, and isometric view (which is 3d type view like Stonesense for Dwarf Fortress, except playable, not just a viewer) Here is an example of Noteye from popular Rougelike, Doom RL!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw7y4_JDkRM

Idea, if such an effect could be added, all beings would appear to be facing the direction they last walked and turning would not advance the turn counter. This way, the simulation could work better though it would make the game slightly harder unless a mini map were implemented.
