I spent some time playing and working different strategies on my own, and this is what I learned. I will add things as I advance the game.
I think I have a good way of surviving those ugly first days.
Character and start.
1) No matter where you start, first things first. Press "i" and take a look at the city. You need to know it before you even move a single square. Remember the commercial district; it is the best place to make your shelter.
2) I think one of the best starting skills is leadership. That way, you can take a companion from the start and avoid sanity troubles later (it is not nice to have nightmares, as they make you lose rest and attract zombies). Books and orange pills are rare, as every npc takes them as soon as they can.
You can also take hauler, but it only gives you a single space, instead of the many ones your follower would give you. Trust builds up fast if you avoid telling it to drop all the items.
Strong psyche is a good one too, but it is not needed if you have a follower from the start.
Agile can be useful if you do not have the battle adviser on, but you should. Only attack when there is a green circle, and you should be fine. Circling around obstacles is a good battle plan.
Shelter
Always make it in the commercial district. All you need will be there and you need to spend as less time as possible walking to your shelter.
1) Sewers: You can hide there and less survivors will try to raid you. One way of protecting your things is pushing the furniture down there to close 3 of the exits of a room forming a H. 3 on each side of the exit, and one in the center. The bad thing of this is the time it takes to build these barricades. It is good for avoiding thieves, but zombies can break them leaving you with nothing (unless you can craft some tall barricades to put in the exits). In the exit you will use, just push a single furniture in there. There is nothing you can do to completely block it without losing important turns.
You can later surround the hole with cars to help avoid zombies following you. But remember there are other holes they can use.
2) Shop with basement: Only with shops with no windows, as you can't fully block them with an "H". First, break the door with "k" ans make that H barricade I explained before. With luck, you will not miss too much loot. You now have a zombie-proof shelter. You can hide the stairs under a shelf. It can help avoid npc from finding your stash, but one of them could push that one shelf and invite others to go downstairs and steal your food.
Followers
From what I know, having only one is the best you can do. You spend turns giving them orders and managing them, and if you change districts, the ones not directly behind you will abandon you. You need one to bond and avoid losing sanity. Once it trusts you enough to take orders from you, you can use it to help you carry things. Do not let them fight zombies alone, help them.
Choose one that has an inventory of things you want for you stash. If you take a follower the first day, it will be easy to level them up as you want them. Be careful, I took a follower that had a rifle and bullets for it, but traded all of them away to get food.
By now, you should have two big hammers, one for each one of you. Or at least large shovels. You want to avoid your infection going up and need to kill the zombies fast.
One last thing: Remember to tell them to not fire guns, no grenades, no trading, no picking up things, and no sleeping. You want complete control over their lives *evil laugh*.
You pick up things and give them to your follower by having your cursor over it in your inventory and pressing "g"
Your stash
Once you have weapons, a safe shelter and a trusting follower, it is time to go looting. Make sure both of you have free spaces in the inventory. Grab food first, then pills and medicine, then guns and bullets. You also need a stench killer if you are hiding in the sewers, as zombies can break your barriers. Step over the hole, and press "a" with it equipped.
In the mid and late game you can waste turns searching for things, so tidy your stash.

I hope you like this guide and help me add and correct the strategies.
