What skills do you add to...
1) when you start the game?
2) as you progress?
I generally pick carpentry right off the bat, and then as I develop, work on bows, firearms, agility, sleep, and hunger related abilities.
I find adding to the bow skill very helpful, as currently the crossbow hold the most ammo in comparison to other weapons, so being able to do maximum damage with it means being able to explore the streets carrying less equipment.

my personal set up for the time being
Start - leadership so i can trade off NPC's and stock up on food/ equipment quickly off the bat. then find a nice mule or support fighter
as time goes on - still learning how it determines which skills you get to pick from each morning, but my more successful runs so far i have gone quickly into agile/ strong and carpentry/ lite eater. for NPC's it depends on their base skills and how i plan to use them mule - hauler and tough melee - agile and strong ranged - bow/ firearms and hauler for more ammo all- lite eater as i prefer to try playing where they can also starve
but ive only had this game for about a week and dont get to play all that much, so this is bound to change over some more time as i learn what im doing

I take Leadership (I like having one follower) for the first one, then I work on mostly Hauler, Light Eater, and Awake, respectively. Then other stuff. >____>
Heck, just look at the "Skill Tiers" section on the wiki, it was written by my, except that excerpt on Martial Arts, Bananamartyr wrote that. >_> <_< >_<

I take light sleeper first because food is easy to find when starting and i hate falling asleep in middle of street.

I always take hauler of light eater first, because food is the biggest problem, then its firearms and upgrading light eater and hauler. Carpentry is next, maybe some stamina and more firearms.

Ahah sleep is my problem but not food, that's odd. Well i often do suicide runs like only keeping one weapon on me and packing my inventory with food then depositing at my stash

I think food is my biggest problem in the beginning, but i usually select hauler in the beginning than firearms/leadership/carpentry.

See I find I never have problems with food or sleep. I generally get my butt to the nearest shopping district, then fortify in a grocery store. If other people are present, I grab al lthe cans I can, then stick them i na corner sorrounded by shelves lol. Or I just grab all the cans I can and then find the nearest, unoccuppied store. Usually have cans left over by the time the army starts dropping rations.

Usually I pick random for the start up, but I tend to favor the Light Eater/Awake/Hauler for my top early picks, and Tough/Agile/High Stamina on second.
Everything else is based on the moment, with Bows as the exception. Maybe it should be in suggestions, but there needs to be a large bow and maybe a small bow, perhaps as a improvised weapon.

I usually pick leadership because it gives me 7 extra inventory slots and a free meatshield

If you ask me Leadership is a much better pick at the beginning than Hauler... A follower can carry much more stuff for you than that one item from the Hauler pick. You might be forced to let them starve (after they've hauled all that useful stuff to your stash), but if you do manage to find enough food they'll be even more useful later on due to the extra skills they get from surviving from day 0, and if they die you can always (well, usually) recruit another follower. Though Hauler does tend to be a high-priority pick for me as well after the first one, possibly even over Leadership depending on the situation - even after you start getting army drops, it can be difficult to keep multiple followers fed if you/they don't have lots of Light Eater.
Other high-priority picks include Firearms (helps your limited ammo supplies last much longer), Light Eater (less time spent looking for food, more for stuff that increases your later chances of survival - plus you'll need this if you've got followers to feed) and High Stamina (critical when running away or fighting in melee). Depending on the kind of game I want to play, I may focus more on Leadership, or the melee-boosting abilities.
The picks I consider lowest priority are Light Sleeper (usually I have more trouble surviving when out and about, rather than when asleep), Bows (Firearms gives bonuses to several commonly-available weapons with differing roles, Bows to only 1... though I like to give this to a follower so I can make the most effective use of all the ammo types available), and Medic (I rarely find myself carrying pills due to limited inventory space, and army drops tend to provide more medikits than I'll ever need). For Carpenter, I like to take one level to enable building fortifications, but further levels are low-priority.

I always generally get Light eater as fast as possible. I always seem to end up five blocks from the nearest grocery store and by the time I get there much has been eaten.
Light sleeper isn't one I generally pick first, I usually get a weapon skill next, whether for melee or otherwise.
I've yet to use leadership as I die often enough, so mixed results there.

Do people find leadership useful? What are your "leader" strategies? I find them incredibly cumbersome for the most part, though now that I've been reincarnating as people who are already leading, I find I am trying to develop strategies for such events.

food depends on how much people is in the map,but using default options I select most of the times Light Eater as the first skill, light sleeper as the second.
