I've been playing for a bit and just got to day 34 after several failed attempts at characters, and I've been kind've running around eating, killing, leading, etc to survive, but I've stumbled into a grocery store with ample food and shelves still there. This makes me wonder what to do though, I have enough food to survive several days and there are plenty of zombies outside, should I spend my time running around outside looting what I can to run back and board up for the night, or just sit out my time barricaded up in my grocery store waiting for the food to run dry? What're your guys thoughts on staying put for awhile or just scavenging for play style?

It depends really. If you have a secure base you should be using it, but as many posters have mentioned: it is often useful to have more than one base. Really the key thing is to make sure whatever you decide, that your safehouses are properly protected. If you can board up the grocery store without getting detected by zombies, you could probably just hold up there for a couple of days and extend your life, but if you have weapons stores somewhere else you will need to get back to them once the food is up. roguelieks are designed for situations to be handled in several ways! Find what works best for you!

Base AND Go. There is absolutely no where in this game that is perfect to stay; food is the number one reason why you have to keep up a nomadic lifestyle. This doesn't mean wandering about aimlessly looking for supplies, leaving yourself vulnerable to that ever growing zombie horde following your scent trail. Find some good spots, like the lower level of the sewer maintenance building, or CHAR complex with a car or two shoved into the hallway, or even the police station or hospital--provided they've been cleared of unsavory types. Move from place to place, with the optimum route sending you out at the beginning of the day for max FOV and min SLP reduction, and ending you at your next safe point with enough time to clear it, refortify, and sleep. Keep your party small, but you need at least one other person in order to keep from going insane. Roam around your pattern, day in and day out, and soon you'll have reached day 100 and have maxed out your stats. That's about quitting time for me, since you can't really win and you can't become superman and fly away.

it WOULD be nice to be able to win the game if you hold out long enough. maybe the Army arrives and clears and fortifies the area, or the zombies starve to death like in 28 Days Later, or the survivors are able to unite and wipe out the zombies, or someone finds a cure/vaccination.

Generally your going to encounter three situations if you base: 1. A horde of zombies breaks into your base and you have to flee 2. A horde of refugees/bikers/etc breaks into your base and you might have to flee 3. You run out of supplies and are forced gradually to make looting trips further and further from base.
What I do is establish a Safe House at the center of a district (I use big districts), and then I establish an outpost in each direction (North, East, West, and South) in the same district, halfway between the center and the edge of the given direction. Rinse and repeat for adjacent districts (minus additional safehouses), changing locations as is needed. The key is that you don't invest too much in your outposts, they are just places you have cleared and prepped a little so that you can rest on your way and ditch quickly if you have to. But build a fortress around the intersection that adjoins the entrance to your safehouse. It will attract survivors who will provide much needed firepower. Boosting stamina and keeping it replenished helps too, as the best form of barricades I have found are cars (providing your playing VTG with no evolution.)
