Does anyone know? Is there any way to know for sure whether a zombie is going to be able to hit you on the next turn? I've been trying to time my melee attacks to avoid getting hit but I can't figure out a consistent pattern.

To find the patterns, observe the zombies. Make a zombie follow you. When he doesn't move start counting and stop counting when he doesn't move again. Look at their speed. You now have the sequence correlated with the speed.
You can enable "Combat Assistant" in the options to help you learn the patterns.
The only tricky parts are: - SPD 0.66 : sometimes appears to randomly act/skip a turn- that's because 3x66=0.99 not 1 so the pattern is a bit chaotic. - when fighting humans : some of them run to rush in for melee contact. - your own SPD eg when tired you're at 0.5.

Yeah thats what was confusing me, was trying to figure out the pattern for a .66 zombie while I was wearing armor with the .10 speed penalty. The pattern ended up being
skip 3rd step two turns skip 3rd step skip 3rd step skip 4th step skip 3rd step skip 5th step skip 3rd step skip 3rd step skip 4th step skip 3rd step skip 5th step skip 3rd step
and then it repeats, assuming you never ran out of stamina.
