I am trying to integrate Followers into my strategy, but I am clueless about how to feed, clothe, and arm them to my satisfaction. What is this Trust that I have to establish, and why can't I initiate a trade to them, rather from them?

You can press G i think to give items to followers to raise their trust, you can also defend em from zombies and kill zombies around your followers to raise their trust. Once they trust you, you can finally give orders to followers and such

It's fun to gain someones trust just so you can tell them to drop everything. I haven't done it much, but it seems a good source of food. And I bet it would be great fun to have a squad of starving tired unarmoured unarmed loyal servents to fight all your battles (and of course die for you).

Figured this'd be a good thread to ask: does anybody know if followers with the Leadership skill will recruit other survivors?

Yes, there is a command that will get them to recruit followers if they have Leadership.
