Pain, I can't get enough Pain, I like it rough 'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all
*Ahem*
Well, we know while the system is fine for now, generally does its best for now. But I believe that someday we are going to need to incorperate more believable things up in this Zombie Apocalypse.
First thing is Pain, Someone shot up close with a shotgun and struck, is not going to be feeling well, as the force of a shotgun. Whether it being buckshot or slugs is going to feel HURT.
Second is stunning, someone smashed with a board/hammer/object is going to be feeling the force of the blow.
Third would be the Uncouncise state, someone getting hurt enough, or being hit enough will be feeling faint, and feeling himself pass out will soon be close at hand.
Fourth, bleeding, Related to the first post is that getting shot. You will BLEED.
Let us groupthink, we need to figure out a realistic, and good way to handle these realistic situations. We will ignore limb damage/Removal for now, to much at once.

Well the game Dwarf Fortress has really realistic damage, but adding it does some things such as:
More Lag Making 1-hit kills very easy And I heard it was a pain to program
My ideas on your thought are
Pain: Is a great thing, maybe make NPC's have a greater chance to run, and to make actions harder.
Stunning: Stunning would be nice, but the thing is hitting a another human with a shotgun, in real life would most likely stun them, making it easy then to kill them. If stunning can only be done from Melee and undead have a high chance to do it would be nice.
Unconscious state: IN this game if you go unconscious, just out in the open, you are dead. Again I think this would be nice, but it would almost be an instant kill every time, you could hit another survivor and knock them out, or they could knock you out and ether way one is dead. It would be nice if you can do a sneak attack on a sleeping or a friend, like choking, that takes a few turns but knocks them out.
Bleeding: I completely agree with this one, if there is a way to make it stop, i.e a skill/ an action

I don't mind the rpg feel of hitpoints without realism, it gives some charm to Rogue survivor in my opinion and yeah it might cause lag and tons of bugs and be really hard to code in, preventing other features to be implemented. (Man dwarf fortress was coded for idk how many years xD)

I know dwarf fortress was going to be mentioned, not going down that route generally, or maybe, but that route generally has short combat, not to mention to much realism.
But at the same time, the current feel just makes it less like a survivor and more. "As long as I have this trusty medikit, I won't die even if I have 1 hp and have been clawed up more times then a dime store pet owner!"
We could easily keep the hit points, maybe for unconscious it could need that the person be below a certain hp, then certain things would knock them out, a reason to keep full hp.
Sneak attacks, or attacks to the back of the skull would knock you out instantly.
Bandages could be used to stem bleeding, along with skills that will enable you to help other patients.
As for DF realism, I dont mind loss of limbs. I'd kick ass even if I have to do it one handed with no legs in a motor wheelchair. Brain damage from getting hit and the like is to much.

I think a good health system should implement Health Points(HP) with various status. Pain, bleeding, burned, open wound, fracture, disease, poison, exhaustion and hunger.(off the top of my head)
HP would automatically recover with time and Status would be given by critical hits. Every different status the actor gets would limit the max HP. Injuries would accumulate with continual critical hits. To fully recover you can stay out of danger for a time, eventually injuries will heal. But still, Status treatment should be a priority. Treatment could come with different items. Medical kits, first aid kits, bandages, antibiotics, antiseptics, analgesics.(again, just off the top of my head)
This way if you don't treat your injuries, your HP will be always low. It also foments to stay out of unnecessary fights and to take care of your actor and followers.
