I have finished reading all the wiki and Ive played 6 or 7 characters so far, my best lasted 14 days, at around 175% difficulty.
And I noticed that the most important thing in the game is securing all the food you can get non stop.
So I started doing the following: as soon as I start I move to the closest shopping district and start entering all buildings and closing them with shelves.
Most of the time when I get in there is nobody inside, and as soon as I enter, I close the entrance by pushing shelves. If someone is inside, they probably take a few items and leave, but you can always kill them after you closed the entrance (no witnesses, then hide the body behind the shelves... I wish)
Anyway, I noticed some patterns.
If I bring a bed/couch to the grocery store, and use the stench killer before entering, barricading myself in with the shelves again and start sleeping... I should be safe, most of the times.
I havent seen NPCs pushing shelves or destroying them. But I read that they can do it.
I only saw zombies bashing shelves to get in if they tracked my scent.
So what Im thinking is this...
does the NPCs cheat, as in, they automatically knows where there is food? If I store food in a grocery store, will they bash the shelves I put in the entrance, even if they cant see the food inside?
I know that living npcs dont "smell" food. But they can see through shelves. So my question is... If I block the entrance of a grocery store, and move all the food to the basement level, or far from the entrance (and their field of view), will they bash the shelves just to see if there is food, at random?
Will they break any shelves or large fortifications inside a grocery store, just because its a grocery store?
Do they automatically know that there is food hidden? Do they need to see the food exist and is there, right behind the shelve, just so start breaking to reach it?
If I put 3 large fortifications around a basement stairs, this would prevent them from knowing there is a basement there...
Would they break LARGE FORTIFICATIONS, because they got suspicious its there to protect something?
In other words, what is the best way to protect a bunch of shopping buildings from other living npcs raiding it?
If I move all the items to another building type, instead of grocery store, or if move all of them to the basement of a grocery store, or if I move them all to a gun shop... Would it change the npc behaviour regarding pushing and breaking shelves/large fortifications?
If the npcs enter in a building and there is a wall of empty shelves in front of them, and even if they get to the edges of it, without pushing it or breaking it, they cant see any items on the ground.... will they start pushing and breaking it?
If yes, why? In wich conditions: building type affects it, will they do it only if they are starving, will they do it if they have previously entered said building and saw objects in there, etc?
What is the best method to secure a bunch of grocery stores/farmacies/gun stores right in the first few days of the game... I.e. the main buildings in a shopping district in a way that other living npcs dont affect it.
I know that as long as I dont drag zombies inside, the shelves/large fortifications will remain forever.
But for sleeping, I can always use another strategy.
I know that people can for example, put their bed in the only entrance to someplace and then it will prevent other npcs from entering it, but I want a method I can use on dozens of buildings at the same time.
