Don't know how other people would feel about this, but I would like to see a dog that followed me around, barked / whined when undead are near, wags tail when friendlies are nearby?
Kind of like a follower I guess, but more loyal and less able to do stuff. I imagine it would attack enemies as well.
In NetHack (and similar rogues) I liked having a pet and felt more alone when it was gone.
At the moment, I'm not bothered if I have followers or not, but if I have something with me from the start I think it will change how I play the game.

I would LOVE it if you could recruit a pet of some sort. That would be so awesome.

Considering that if someone gets killed by a zed that they become one, that means the zeds are infected with a virus. If that is so, then the way dogs attack (biting) would infect them.
Personally, this is cool though.

A cat would be a cool extra/Easter egg. Maybe it's a random event--every few games a cat spawns. The cat would likely get eaten by zombies, but there's a chance you'll find it first and can take it on as a follower. Maybe it could be a free follower--doesn't take one of your leadership points.
Pets are very useful in Nethack. I can't think of many uses for one in this game (maybe as bait or decoy), but it would be good for a) roguelike-style feature bloat and b) immersion. Finding the rare cat, taming it, and then losing it could be an emotional experience.

that may sound ridiculous but: Why not have pet shops with dogs and cats that can be recruited? (only one at a time though) There would only be one pet shop in the game maybe? And there is a high risk factor the pets get infected into zombies so you can't have em.

How's this? An homage to the pet store scene in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

Two words: Starved zombification. by default you have a 50% chance to become a zombie by starving.. I think it's an airborne thing that takes effect after you die. I think Char was messing with the aspects of death to make people... you know.. immortal. It makes sense that it'd only take effect then. This is also why infection doesn't make sense to me.
