There should be a trap skill, which enables one to turn a grenade into a tripwire trap. If anything--zombie or human--steps into the trapped tile, the grenade detonates.
Trap detection could also be a skill (or maybe "trap making" also imparts a trap detection bonus). NPCs that detect traps will not step into them. And, if NPCs set traps, players with the ability to detect traps will see them on the screen and can avoid them.
Also, disarming traps. This could also be a function of the one base skill. Disarming a grenade trap would turn the trap into a grenade that can be picked up. NPCs could also learn this skill, and/or it could be tied to the type of NPC (e.g., National Guard or Cops could have basic bomb disposal abilities).
There could be other types of traps, too. There's no digging ability, but I could imagine digging a hole and placing an improvised spear in it. A shotgun could be sacrificed similarly to a grenade. A tracker (maybe a cell phone) could be used to alert the player when a tile has been crossed.

I like the idea of a trap, but it'd be nice if I could set it to work on only undead or something, or if it goes off on a human, I'm not held responsible and yelled at by police about I killed 30 survivors stupid enough to try and raid the Char base I jacked.
